The Turbo Folk Invasion Part 3 by express

The Turbo-folk phenomenon is growing by the day among the Croatian youth. People know the lyrics off by heart, and many patrons of Turbo-folk clubs are not embarrassed to say that they are fans of the genre.

“It’s not embarrassing at all. It’s just a form of music. Everyone has their own taste,” said a 21 year old civil engineering student from Zagreb. He also claimed that most of his colleagues at university listen to Turbo-folk. His parents however are divided on the issue.

The producers and creators of Turbo-folk have copied the aesthetics of American rap clips, filling every shot with scantily clad women and covered everyone with so much jewellery that the combined weight of gold and jewels would undoubtedly number in the kilos. Rappers often seem to promote a ‘glamorous’ lifestyle of luxury and crime which influence children across the entire planet. Kids in Croatia have also been known to copy these rappers, however now it is even more tangible when it’s in a language they understand.

Many people who travel to the homeland for the first time are astounded at how popular Serbian ‘Turbo-folk’ really is among Croatians in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Although this is not a new topic by any means, as we regularly see war veterans protesting against upcoming concerts of these ‘pevaljke’, it seems this phenomenon is reaching epic proportions.
